Spring Mountain Vineyard Embarks on Historic Replanting, Ushering in a New Era of Excellence

St. Helena, Calif. –  May 1, 2025 – Spring Mountain Vineyard, a 19th century storied estate nestled in the Spring Mountain District Appellation in the Mayacamas Mountain Range, is proud to announce a significant transformation with a large-scale 225 acre vineyard replanting, restoring its historic glory.  Setting the stage for world class wines are acclaimed winemakers Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky of Atelier Melka, with Barrett Anderson of Spring Mountain Vineyard. Charting the future of Spring Mountain Vineyard with this ambitious replanting project is renowned viticulturist Garrett Buckland of Premiere Viticultural Services and lead vineyard manager Paul Goldberg, President of Bettinelli Vineyards, both recipients of the “Napa Valley Grower of the Year” award in 2023 and 2024 respectively, marking a rebirth for the estate and recognizing the resilience and grace of its rich heritage following the destructive 2020 Glass Fire.

Spanning more than 845 acres, Spring Mountain Vineyard gently climbs the eastern slopes of the Spring Mountain District AVA. Its unique landscape, characterized by diverse elevation, soil, and exposure, has long contributed to Napa Valley’s exceptional winemaking. The replanting effort includes all four ranches that comprise Spring Mountain Vineyard, beginning this month with 40 acres of the Miravalle ranch and 12 acres of the Chateau Chevalier ranch, to be followed by the La Perla and Alba ranches in 2026 and 2027.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time to have input from the ground up,” says Peter Ekman, Spring Mountain Vineyard CEO. “These early decisions, from rootstock to clonal selections to row orientation, ultimately have a profound impact on our next chapter. This significant transformation aims to restore Spring Mountain Vineyard’s historic glory, honoring its heritage and pedigree while extending its legacy into the next century, ensuring that it continues to produce exceptional wines for generations to come.

Spring Mountain Vineyard’s history dates back to the late 19th century with the founding of La Perla, Chateau Chevalier, Alba and Miravalle estates between 1872 and 1884. These early pioneers planted vines and built wine cellars, driven by a belief that the mountain could produce world-class wine. La Perla was the first home to Cabernet Sauvignon vines on Spring Mountain, and Chateau Chevalier is credited with establishing one of the earliest gravity-flow wineries in the region.

In 1976, Spring Mountain Chardonnay placed fourth in the Judgement of Paris, outperforming famous French houses and putting the region on the map. By the 1990s, the neighboring estates were joined to form Spring Mountain Vineyard, a single entity that today reflects more than five decades of winemaking.

Spring Mountain Vineyard was acquired in 2023 by MGG Investment Group, a leading private investment firm that works with owners and management teams to help build lasting value. Kevin Griffin, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer and Founder of MGG comments, “As a steward of Spring Mountain Vineyard’s rich 150-year legacy, we are pleased to support this significant vineyard replanting initiative. Led by a world-class team of leading viticulturists, winemakers, and wine industry executives, Spring Mountain Vineyard is poised to continue to deliver the highest quality wine and extraordinary experiences to consumers worldwide.”
