A New Chapter for Sonoma Portworks: Legacy Continues Under Heringer Family Leadership

April 10, 2025 (Petaluma, CA) – Sonoma Portworks, beloved for its small-batch ports and after-dinner wines, is beginning a new chapter. Founders Bill and Caryn Reading have officially retired after over 25 years. They will be leaving Sonoma Portworks in the hands of the Heringer family of Clarksburg, longtime grape growers and friends.

For over two decades, the Heringers have supplied grapes to Sonoma Portworks, helping shape its signature style. Now, as sixth-generation farmers and third-generation winegrowers, they will carry the brand’s legacy forward.

“We have been buying grapes from the Heringers for more than 20 years and know them well. We’re pleased that they will continue our legacy,” says Bill Reading

The spirit of Sonoma Portworks will remain the same. The Petaluma tasting room will remain open, continuing to serve the same handcrafted ports fans know and love. Longtime winemaker Deneice Knotts, Wine Club Manager Gail Butler, and the familiar team will stay on to welcome and serve guests.

What’s new: Sonoma Portworks will soon feature bold, organically farmed wines from Heringer Estates, perfect complements to their signature ports. Guests can also expect expanded tastings, returning events, and fresh food pairings that celebrate this new partnership.

“It’s about continuing the story,” says Mike Heringer, owner, winemaker, and CEO of Heringer Estates. “Bill and Caryn built something truly special, and we’re honored to carry that forward with care, respect, and plenty of port.”

As the legacy of Sonoma Portworks merges with Heringer Estates, wine lovers can expect the same warm welcome, the same handcrafted excellence and a growing family ready to toast to the future.
